Serbia marks 72 years since the German bombing of Belgrade in 1941.
Germany's air force bombed Belgrade on 6 April 1941, which marked the
beginning of the Nazi invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. At 6:30 in
the morning, without a declaration of
war, the forces of the Third Reich invaded the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Their air forces bombed Belgrade using 234 bombers and 120 fighters (a
total of 484 aircraft on April 6 and 7). The planes took off from
Vienna, Graz and Arad. The city was bombed for four days, on 6th and 7th
of April and then again on 11th and 12th of April 1941. Germans used
approximately 440 tons of incendiary bombs. During the bombing of
Belgrade in 1941 more than 2,274 people were killed (there are estimates
of 2,271 - 4,000 killed, some data say 10,000, and the German estimates
are from 1,500 to 1,700). 627 buildings were destroyed, 1,601 heavily
damaged buildings, 6,829 partially damaged buildings, including a part
of the building of the Old Palace. Vaznesenjska Church was also badly
damaged while the believers were in it. The most important monument
destroyed in the bombing was the building of the National library of
Serbia with 300,000 books, including priceless medieval writings and
manuscripts. German Field Marshal von Kleist said on his trial after the
war: "The air attack on Belgrade in 1941 primarily had the
political-terrorist character and had nothing to do with the war. This
aerial bombing was a matter of Hitler's vanity, his personal revenge".
Central commemorative ceremony will be at noon today at the monument to
the pilots killed in the defense of Belgrade on Zemun quay.

Србија данас обележава 72 године од немачког бомбардовања Београда
1941. године. Авијација Немачке бомбардовала је Београд 6. априла 1941,
што је означило почетак инвазије на Краљевину Југославију. У 6:30
ујутру, без објаве рата, силе Трећег рајха су напале Краљевину
Југославију. Њихове ваздушне снаге су бомбардовале Београд користећи 234

средњовековне списе непроцењиве вредности. Немачки фелдмаршал фон Клајст
је на суђењу после рата изјавио: „Ваздушни напад на Београд 1941.
године имао је првенствено политичко-терористички карактер и није имао
ништа заједничко са ратом. То бомбардовање из ваздуха било је ствар
Хитлерове сујете, његове личне освете.“ Централна комеморативна
свечаност биће у 12 сати код споменика страдалим пилотима браниоцима
Београда на Земунском кеју.
